  1. How did taker v michaels not get 5 stars

  2. Have you ever thought about posting the ratings for matches that weren't considered *** or higher?

Also, because I'm not a subscriber to the Observer, but I remember a really good match from the last Smackdown just before Extreme Rules between Edge/Rey Mysterio that had to have gone 20 minutes. Was surprised not to see it make this list.

  5. First an ANAL NOTE~!!!

I just happened to read the SummerSlam '92 review this week (it was just posted in the archive) and noticed Bulldog/Bret was ****1/2. I think I noticed something earlier in the year from Lockdown that was off by a quarter. I think it may been Team 3-D/Beer Money. No biggie.

I don't run this page but as observations/answers to a couple of questions:

    Re: 10/8/09 7:19 Question:

Why? I think it's pretty reasonable to have *** be the cut as it's a good spot to ensure better than decent matches get listed? I'm not sure what the mass appeal of a list of **1/4+ matches would be or whatever.

    Re: Various Matches Missing;

This has been the first year I've read the Observer nearly every week and I've noticed that he really doesn't rate a lot of Superstars/Smackdown TV matches. It may be due to not seeing the full shows which would be understandable. There's only so many hours in the day especially since he writers for the MMA section of Yahoo Sports now. RAW for the most part he does but he just didn't on HBK/Cena for whatever reason (I'd argue Cena/Swagger that would be right on the *** line).

    Re: Japan.

This is actually the reason why I came to this site: for help. I'm working on a list of 4+ matches from Japan but I'm working entirely off the archives. So really I only have matches from 1991 and 1992 now. If anyone has any access to any past Observers with **** + ratings of anything from Japan, email me (childofpunk76@yahoo.com) the details and I'll add it to the list. Even if you've got a random issue from 1996 with a couple of matches, I'll take it. Any help would be appreciated and will be credited.

I'll likely have the list as it is now up in about a week or so and will post a link in the comments section of this page.

  6. ive noticed that he doesnt always rates smackdown matches and i think he didnt rate any of superstar matches this year which is a shame since both shows had some very good matches but i understand that he has alot of work to do and is not able to rate all of the matches

    ReplyDelete
  7. That's fair enough with regards to matches below ***. It's more of a curiosity reason than anything else, but I see your point.

It's funny you say that he doesn't always rate Smackdown matches because he doesn't have time to watch them. Based on the updated list, he's got one match from September and two matches from October that were ***+.

He also seems to consistently rate ECW matches.

But the last Raw match that got over *** on this list if I'm correct, was Triple H vs. John Cena from JULY. That to me, doesn't seem right.

If anyone who checks out this list knows what he rated the following matches, please post it if possible:

Rey Mysterio vs. Edge from June 5, 2009
Chris Jericho vs. CM Punk from June 12, 2009
Jeff Hardy vs. Edge from June 12, 2009

    ReplyDelete
  8. were is that updated list?

the reason raw matches dont get *** or ***+ is because the matches are not give time most of the matches are 5 to 8 min the last match that got time was cena vs hhh which was the last time that a match on raw got time and was given a rating higher than ***.
i think the dx vs jerishow has the possibility to be *** or ***+ but thats just me

  9. On 'Taker vs. Michaels....

Meltzer seems reluctant to give any WWE matches *****. Does anybody really believe there hasn't been a WWE match in the past 12 years on the same level as that TNA 3-Way, Joe-Punk 2, Joe-Kobashi or the ROH DragonGate 6-Man? While I love checking this site out, you have to realize Meltzer has his favorites, just like anyone else. There's (at least one) rather midding All Japan tag match and War Games '91 with Sid giving one of the worst performance in wrestling history that got *****. Meltzer's word is not gospel. Still, I find this site an invaluable resource and I've checked it regularly for years now, even if I sometimes disagree with his ratings.

    On Smackdown matches...

I always thought he missed some Smackdown episodes. Over the years, there have been matches I was sure he'd rate ***+ that never showed up on the list. I always assumed it was because he was too busy. Seems like that is the general consensus.

To the guy who does the site...

Thank you :) As I said, this has been an invaluable resource for me over the years.

    ReplyDelete
  10. When I said "updated list", I meant the list on this page.

Okay, thanks for the clarification on the Raw matches. I don't watch Raw as much as I used to.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Agreed with the comment on Meltzer reluctant giving any current WWE matches *****. I thought Taker/HBK from Mania, Benoit/Angle from the Rumble, and Angle/HBK from Mania should have been considered ***** matches.

Again, it's all opinion of what's considered 5-stars and what isn't. And Meltzer has his own for sure.

Wanted to add my own thanks as well to the people(s?) who run this site. Much appreciated.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I disagree about Taker/HBK from Mania. It was a great match but not perfect, it has a slow opening few minutes and feels like both guys were just going through the motions. Thats not to say it wasn't GREAT and that this is a tenuous critique, but I wouldn't call it a ***** perfect match. Though the atmosphere does contribute to the match's aura.

However, some ***** matches, from WWE at least, that I think Meltzer underrated include: Savage/Steamboat (WM III), Austin/Hart (Survivor Series '96), Austin/Dude Love (Over the Edge '98), and HHH/Cactus Jack (Royal Rumble '00).

    ReplyDelete
  13. yes when i watch some of smackdown matches i think some of the matches are for sure *** or ***+ and when i come here to see his rating they are not here

its understandable why you dont watch raw as much as you used to

on meltzer underrating wwe matches i have to agree with you guys in some of the matches i think that they are ***** and he gave them ****3\4 or ****1\2 like: HBK vs Mankind(in your house), Edge\Rey vs Angle\Benoit(No Mercy 02), Angle vs HBK(Vengeance 05), Orton vs Foley(Backlash 04), HHH vs Foley(Royal Rumble 00), Benoit vs Jericho(Royal Rumble 01), Angle vs Benoit(Royal Rumble 03), Hart vs Hart(WM 10), Austin vs Bret(Survivor Series 96) and some times i think he overrates some matches like: Punk vs JoeII, Kobashi vs Joe, 3 way(Unbreakable), Hart vs Hart(Summerslam 94), HBK vs Angle(WM 21), HBK vs Taker(WM 25), Bret vs Austin(WM 13)

    ReplyDelete
  14. i forgot to say that i also think that he overrated the bret vs hbk ironman and the lesnar vs angle ironman

I understand and I wasn't suggesting that he NEVER rated Smackdown matches. The thing is, when you mention that the number of ratings per show "doesn't seem right", you've basically nailed it. There's nothing logical about the TV ratings.

I'm not sure how many people asking about TV matches read the Observer or not but here's how it usually goes:

. PPV matches are always rated from start to finish. TV matches are rated sporadically. ECW is the most common. On the flip side, I think two or three Impact matches have been rated all year. I've never seen a rating given to a TV match that was under *** so it's not like every match of a specific show is rated (occasionally there might be for the special TV shows like three hours shows). There really doesn't seem to be any logic behind what is or isn't rated. For example, this week in the RAW TV report he referred to Miz/Kofi as being "really good" but didn't give it a rating.

Don't take this ratings as a end-all, be-all list of good wrestling matches across the board. PPV, maybe. Every thing, nope.

    - Will

  16. I'm confused a bit about Bragging Rights. Did he not rate the DX/Legacy match or did he seriously give it under 3 stars? That match deserved at least 4, maybe more. The Miz/Kofi match from the same ppv was 3 stars to me too.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Well I don't think a ***** match has to be perfect, because I don't think I have ever seen a TRUELY perfect match. I think a ***** match should be as close to perfect as it can get, but I don't think its fair to expect perfection.

You mean Breaking Point? DX/Legacy was **1/2. Miz/Kofi was **3/4.

  19. Yeah my bad, I meant Breaking Point. How the hell was DX/Legacy only 2 and a half?! Their match at Summerslam was very boring yet this match was really good. Even Kofi/Miz did better?

    ReplyDelete
  20. Just so non-Observer subscribers know, just because a match isn't on the list doesn't mean it was necessarily below ***. Meltzer doesn't rate every TV match. He rates every PPV match, and certain TV matches he deems noteworthy.

  21. Please tell me how the hell the I Quit match between Cena/Orton got ****1/4. That was probably one of the worst I Quit matches I've seen. Cena and Orton has been a terrible rivalry

    ReplyDelete
  22. Subscribe to the Observer and read the review.

Complaining about ratings gets so old so fast. It's subjective. Deal with it.

  23. He said the match had great storytelling and could define Cena's toughness in his career for years to come.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Thought the Orton/Cena HIAC match was much more solid than the I Quit match.Neither would deserve a 4 star IMO.Also feel he got the 1994 matches between Hart and Owen,in the wrong order.
The cage match was slightly inferior to the singles match at WM 10.

  26. Bragging Rights Ratings:

The Miz vs. John Morrison = **3/4

Michelle McCool, Beth Phoenix & Natalya vs. Melina, Gail Kim & Kelly Kelly = **1/4

The Undertaker vs. Batista vs. Rey Mysterio vs. CM Punk (Fatal Four-Way) = ***

Team SmackDown vs. Team Raw = ***1/4

John Cena vs. Randy Orton (One Hour, Anything Goes WWE Iron Man Match) = ***1/2

  27. Theres no way that womens match at Bragging Rights was **1/4 stars. That just doesn't make sense. At best it was *1/4 but more than likely it was a *.Its pretty hard for women in the WWE to get a **1/4 match and that match certainly wasn't it.I mean, you're basically saying Miz and Morrison was just 3/4* of a star better and thats just insane considering John Morrison has been the best worker in the WWE this year.

    ReplyDelete
  28. and to the guy who said AMW/XXX was the best cage match ever......its not even in the top 5.Tully Blanchard and Magnum TA says hello....so does Bret and Owen.....so does about 4 War Games matches.....and anything involving Sabu is shit, thus ruling out that random cage match you mentioned.

  29. To the guy who runs this site: have you thought about turning comments off? Such a great site with such annoying comments.

It's called being subjective. For example, I think John Morrison being called the "best" in anything but ripping the indys off is ridiculous but I'm a) going to keep that to myself or b) at the very least not be an arrogrant ass who takes differents opinions too seriously.

When you start treating PRO FLIPPING WRESTLING like it has some criteria set in stone for being X amount of snowflakes, it might time to stop. Not only that but most who complain and say that something "doesn't make sense" are just seeing snowflakes. They don't read the Observer or the actual review. Then again when **3/4 minus **1/4 gives you 3/4*, I might be expecting too much.

  30. Rey Misterio is WWE's most outstanding worker in 2009 IMO. He had good-excellent matches with nearly everyone he worked with. I really don't see the big deal about Morrison either.

"i think he overrates some matches like: Punk vs JoeII, Kobashi vs Joe, 3 way(Unbreakable), Hart vs Hart(Summerslam 94), HBK vs Angle(WM 21), HBK vs Taker(WM 25), Bret vs Austin(WM 13)"

I'm in agreement with Punk vs Joe II and HBK vs. Angle (WM21) being overrated (especially the WM21 match, which I feel is among the most overrated matches ever), but I thought the others were fantastic and Bret vs. Austin (WM13) is generally considered by most to be the greatest WWF match ever and among the best matches of all time. What was it that you didn't like about it?

    Anonymous said...
"i forgot to say that i also think that he overrated the bret vs hbk ironman and the lesnar vs angle ironman"

Those matches were rated ****1/4. I don't think that's too high for Bret vs. Shawn, which was considered a disappointment at the time by many. I'm not a big fan of either match or WWE Iron Man Matches in general. I haven't seen Angle vs. Lesnar since it aired and have no desire to do so anytime soon. I thought that the majority of people disliked that match (except for Wade Keller of PW Torch, who I believe gave it *****).

  31. I've gotta go with John Morrison for best WWE worker of the year. The guy has had load of good matches with a wide variety of guys. Shelton Benjamin, Dolph Ziggler, Umaga, CM Punk, Jeff Hardy, and of course one of the best WWE matches of the year with Rey Mysterio.

  32. responding to lariet i liked more the austin vs hart from survivor series 96 better than the austin vs hart submission matches because they had crowd brawl and im not a fan of crowd brawl it still was a fantastic match just not *****, the hart vs hart match i think he should have given ***** to the wrestlemania match and ****3/4 to the steel cage match, joe vs kobashi was a chop fest by i still liked the psychology of that match but again not ***** , joe vs daniels vs aj i think he should have given ****3/4 and ***** on the hhh vs benoit vs hbk, on the ironman matches hbk vs bret i didnt like it because it had alot of dead spotbut it had a nice build up on the brock vs angle they were trying to have a big brawl but it didnt work and had a 5 min stare down which i didnt apreciate, on the taker vs hbk at wm ithought they over used the kicking out of finishers and had 2 big botches

  72. READING~!!!

I like how you read my post that I personally didn't think he was that great yet apparently skipped the part where I said THAT IT WAS ALL SUBJECTIVE. Look the word up and don't be an anal retentive geek who tries to prove subjective opinions right or wrong. So I don't think doing 2003 indytastic moves and a bunch of snowflakes makes you the best worker of the year. Is it really worth posting a small thesis a month after my original comment?

    ReplyDelete
  73. I don't rate Morrison highly either. My friend that religiously watches WWE loves him though. I get the impression that WWE-only fans are more impressed by Morrison than those who watch multiple brands. (Not that I can talk, I very rarely watch wrestling not on TNA/WWE.)

    ReplyDelete
  74. did he rate Cena vs. Punk one week ago?

    ReplyDelete
  75. I too am not overly enamoured with John Morrison but while most peoples opinions are wholly subjective, mine is exclusively objective and based on actual facts. So there.

    ReplyDelete
  76. You're also not overly enamoured with being witty either as that was pretty pathetic even for the Internet.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Well,if match quality doesn't make you the best worker of the year then what other judgement do you go on? While saying such and such is the best worker of the year might be subjective,it doesn't mean you can't be wrong. If someone said Vladimir Kozlov was the worker of the year, sure its their opinion but they are wrong.Common sense dictates the handful of wrestlers who can logically be considered for such a moniker,John Morrison being at the top of the list,at least until mid November or so but you can also make cases for Jericho,Orton and Christian. The whole "there is no right answer because its all opinion" is absolutely ridiculous.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Was that a witty enough response?

    ReplyDelete
  79. You miss this simple fact: match quality doesn't matter to everyone and your opinion doesn't become any more valid because you do. It's actually an overrated aspect of pro wrestling especially on the Internet. There's plenty of "bad" workers (going on the in-ring criteria) who have made millions more than a bunch of "good" workers making peanuts a night working the opener. That fact has been around for at least thirty years. How does that happen? It's not just that these "bad" workers get a push. It's that people LIKE THEM and are willing to PAY MONEY to see them. How does that happen? Because not everyone cares about match quality. This is not a revolutionary statement.

Further, you don't go anything because there is no such thing as "best worker". It's all the prejudices of people who are marks for their voice. People who lecture as what opinions of entertainment are right and wrong are, simply, geeks with an overinflated ego. Anyone can invent some sort of criteria like "match quality" to make themselves look like they know something. Their funadmental mistake is not seeing past their own nose though.

Look: Pro wrestling is not science. It's not math. There are no right answers. It's a carnival sideshow to make money. Thinking about it in terms of objectivity and then actually being expected to be taken seriously is a riot.

    ReplyDelete
  80. And just to clarify because I could see this being taken the wrong way:

When I say "carnival sideshow to make money" I don't mean it in a bad way. It's more than fine to be a serious fan of pro wrestling (I certainly am) regardless of what type of wrestling you like or don't like. I personally don't get the appeal of 95% of Lucha but that doesn't mean I think people who love it are any more or less "right" than I am. What's ultimately ridiculous is to think you're right about something as unprovable as entertainment based on criteria than you pick and choose from.

    ReplyDelete
  81. If we don't set some ground rules then this comments board is going to get real ugly. I suggest we keep the topic strictly to WON ratings not currently available above. If you want to discuss workrate etc. then I suggest you find a forum full of likeminded individuals. I for one would simply like a place to be updated about star ratings. Thank-you.

    ReplyDelete
  82. What were the ratings of TLC? Thanks

    ReplyDelete
  83. Making the most money in wrestling is something thats completely different than being the best worker.Putting people in seats or selling merchandise shouldn't factor into who's the best worker.Just because wrestling isn't real doesn't mean theres not an element of competition between the wrestlers. You can't script a good match,if that was the case every match would be good. Wrestling is a profession and just like any other profession, some people are better than others and wrestling isn't any different.People like Chris Jericho,CM Punk,Triple H,Shawn Michaels,Ric Flair,Chris Benoit,Eddie Guerrero, they all prided themselves on being the best at what they do for a living.being a draw doesn't make you the best wrestler,it makes you the most profitable and the biggest wrestler but it doesn't make you the best.Talent and ability do and to suggest or imply that none of that matters because they don't draw so they aren't the best is lunacy. While you consistently say how much my opinion annoys you,you certainly are quick to jump on everyone elses. I have no problem with people having opinions,I do have a problem with people having stupid opinions. Not just an opinion I disagree with because those are fine but blantant stupid opinions are unacceptable. If someone is going to say such and such is the best wrestler in the WWE then actually have some type of facts to back it up. Sure, people can say "well, opinions don't need to be based on facts" but if someone says the sky is purple and not blue, they would be wrong and an idiot. Same thing applies to wrestling.

Not sure where you got that from. I just pointed out that not EVERYONE cares about match quality, which is shown by some of the draws throughout history. Anyways, this discussion is plagued by a fundamental difference in the word "worker" so I'm not continuing. Though I do appreciate that someone cares so much about match quality. That's not overstated sarcasm. While it would be boring if EVERYONE did, I do wish more fans did at least to a higher level than they currently do.

    Peace.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Meltzer giving McCool/James that high of rating is really disappointing. He's not as smart as some of you would like to think he is.That match was terrible.Maybe he has a bias towards Michelle McCool. He already has one with Shawn.Although he got everything else on the card right, maybe except for benjamin/Christian.Stopping the match in the middle of it to clean Christian's cut ruins it from being a **** affair. Plus they had some contrived spots too and suprising to absolutely nobody,Shelton benjamin blew some spots.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Haha. This site is quite funny.

Start your own site if you're so smart on wrestling and such an expert on ratings. Stop constanting bitching about something being overrated and putting yourself over. Frankly, no one gives a shit about your opinions. Not everyone is going to agree even 50% of the time with every single rating but they aren't such a fucking nerd that they have to talk about how "he's not as smart as some of you would like to think".

    ReplyDelete
  93. Well,he's not and clearly you cared enough about my opinion to spend 5 minutes typing a response to it.

    ReplyDelete
  94. What's clear is that you're a fucking moron.

It doesn't take five minutes to type about a hundred words (then again since you're such a idiot, it might) and, no, I don't care. If I cared, I'd actually be DISCUSSING your opinion and wishing to prove you wrong. That's not what I'm doing. I'm simply telling you that you're everything that sucks about The Internet and that no one gives a shit if you think Dave Fucking Meltzer overrated something. You're a fucking anonymous shit on the Internet. Why should anyone have to even spend three seconds scrolling through your self-righteous known-it-all garbage?

Simply put: Fuck you and your ego.

  96. Well you see where being self righteous gets you. Just ask C.M.Punk about that.If anyone was ever a jobber in that company, its C.M.Punk.He's so far away from where he was 6 months ago and he's never going to get back there.Carlito got more offense on Cena......Carlito......

    ReplyDelete
  97. It was never going to last self-righteousnes or not. He wasn't a chosen top guy so he won't be a top guy long. The last four years have taught us that. The current push and cooling off on Kofi Kingston is another example.

Never say never with a company that changes it's mind seemingly daily though.

    ReplyDelete
  98. The thing is the push Punk got in comparison to the one Kofi got was completely different,at least on the surface it was.It seemed like Punk was being positioned to be a top guy but the company just doesn't like him,or they don't trust him. They completely trust Sheamus and they completely trust Drew McIntyre and at this point,Kofi Kingston is higher on the food chain than Punk. Kofi isn't a jobber but it sure looks like Punk is.I mean,in 6 months things could certainly be different but the horizon doesn't look too good for CM Punk. The company just doesn't like him.The booking would suggest that. They like The Miz more and 5 months ago that would have been insane to even think.

    ReplyDelete
  99. Some of the dates on here are wrong you guys. For example, the Big Bossman vs. Hulk Hogan steel cage match from 1989 was taped on April 25th 1989 and than aired on an episode of Saturday Night's Main Event on May 27th 1989.

Just thought you guys might want to know and change it.

    ReplyDelete
  103. I'm not even sure if theres a clear choice for Wrestler Of The Year. Randy Orton seems about as good of a pick as anyone when you factor into quality of his matches, the interest in his character and the success he's had this year.

    ReplyDelete
  104. That was one of the harder awards for me to pick. I honestly couldn't even put a WWE guy in my three votes as there's NO ONE that I feel carried the company (I eventually just had to pick Tanahashi/Angle/Richards because that's a close as anyone to truly carrying a promotion this year). I considered Hardy but really he had a good first few months, then a lackluster feud with his brother and then an INCREDIBLE summer. Had we picked BEST QUARTER OF THE YEAR: Hardy/Summer would have it.

I think the thing that hurts Orton is that he basically feuded with three people all year: Triple H, Cena and Kingston. The first two, for all the good matches that they may have (and I didn't even come close to enjoying any of the Triple H matches except the six-man at Backlash), have been done to death and the third had it's legs cut off for seemingly no reason right as it peaked. In March it seemed like he was on the cusp of being a guy the company could build around but the repetitive, directionless booking he was stuck in all year makes him just another top guy but not THE GUY.

Well,I don't think anyone,in the very forseeable future, will be THE guy in the WWE other than John Cena. However,Randy Orton had the best year for the biggest wrestling promotion in the world and that has to account for something.I actually think its good that randy only feuded with 3 guys all year as I'm a guy that hates a bunch of mini feuds.Winning the Royal Rumble match, winning 3 world championships and consistently being such a great and interesting character just puts him over everyone that I've seen, granted I don't watch much ROH or Japan stuff. Kurt Angle I just can't vote for because, much like Orton,Angle didn't dominate the entire year and held the world championship for a less amount of time than Orton did.I'd put Styles over Angle, all things considered but nobody really had a dominant year in wrestling and really hasn't since Cena in 2007.Punk was looking like he was going to be that guy in July but that company hates him so it was just smoke and mirrors. As weird as this sounds, from a pure successful and match quality and consistent popularity,I can't think of anyone that did it better than Christian from March to December. I know he's on ECW,an irrelevant show but its not really fair to Christian to dismiss him for that,is it?

    ReplyDelete
  107. I guess it depends on what your voting criteria is. If you look at as who had the biggest year of the BIG company, you'd have to dismiss him as he's of little consequence in the WWE. If you vote based on what someone does with their position regardless of what size of company/brand (which would be my criteria) I think he could be a easy Top Five guy.

I don't really think there is "THE GUY" in the vein of Hogan/Austin/Rock anymore. The WWE is ensemble casting nowadays because THE GUY is not needed as the machine itself sells. The letters "WWE" are the main draw now.

  108. Update on the awards:

The awards issue has been pushed back two weeks due to the Steve Williams obituary running next week.

    ReplyDelete
  109. no ratings for 2010?

since i dont watch japonese wrestling my picks for wrestler of the year would be either orton, angle or davey richards

    ReplyDelete
  110. There hasn't been any PPVs though. TNA will be this weekend and I think Dragon Gate is next though so those will be coming.

I think the only ratings I've seen is for AJ Styles vs. Kurt Angle 1/4 (****) and Naomichi Marufuji vs. Tiger Mask and Takashi Sugiura vs. Hirooki Goto (both "****1/4 or better").

    ReplyDelete
  111. i dont know if this is legit but i read that bryan alvarez gave the richards vs yamato and other match from the next dg usa show ****1\4

    ReplyDelete
  112. Yes. Bryan reviewed an advance copy about two issue ago. He gave Richards/Yamato and Doi/Yoshino vs. SHINGO/Kid both ****1/4. Hulk/Kendrick and the finals were ***1/4, CIMA/Quack/Crazy/Skyade *** and the six-way opener **3/4.

    ReplyDelete
  113. Christian vs. Regal on 1/19 was ***1/4.

    ReplyDelete
  114. Wajt did he REALLY not give the Smackdown/ECW Elimination Chamber from NWO 08 more than 3? That's insane.

    ReplyDelete
  115. YEA, he gave that match 2 3/4 stars, so close

    ReplyDelete
  116. That SD chamber match from No Way Out 2008 really wasn't that good at all. He's right on the rating. The SD Chamber match from 09 was way better.I never really understood what people saw in that 08 SD/ECW chamber match.

  117. Someone asked about the awards a while back. They came out today. The full list is up on Wikipedia.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Wrestling_Observer_Newsletter_awards

    Interesting notes from the awards:

Chris Jericho is the first American to win back to back years in the Lou Thesz/Ric Flair award category in twenty years.

Bryan Danielson won Most Outstanding wrestler for the fourth straight year breaking Jushin Liger and Kurt Angle records of three straight years. He also won Best Technical Wrestler for the fifth straight year, easily the consecutive record.

The Dragon Gate 9/6 show produced two of top four of Match of the Year (Richards/SHINGO was #2 and Danielson/Doi was #4). Both the DG PPVs were in the top three in the Show of the Year category. Taker/Michaels was the only match in the top six to not feature someone from Japan.

Nine of the top ten votes in Most Underrated were from the WWE which says a lot. Alex Shelley was the only one from outside the WWE.

Jim Ross won Announcer of the Year for the thirteenth year. That's never being broken.

Victory Road as Worst Show was one of the biggest landslides ever (as it should have been as that show was an unreal level of bad). It's point total was 478. The first runner up (Breaking Point) was 22.

    ReplyDelete
  118. why did jericho won it again can some one explain me? the rest i pretty much agree except that striker should have won the announcer of the year and that davey didnt won the most outstanding wrestler

    ReplyDelete
  119. I figured he'd be in the top three anyways so I don't think it's a huge suprise. Looking at the Top Ten, I could make a case for ANY of them winning it as this was a year of no one having the traditional winning year. I think had Jeff Hardy stuck around in the WWE for the rest of the year (and had a better feud with his brother) or if Punk hadn't been dress coded, either would have been a stronger lock for it than Jericho.

    The Top Ten was:

Jericho, Tanahashi, Doi, Punk, Orton, Hardy, Cena, Richards, Danielson, and Angle.

    ReplyDelete
  120. i could make a case also for orton if he had a better feud with HHH i think he would be a stronger lock than jericho,i was read the winners i also had a problem with how won the most charismatic i think jeff should have won that award also why dont they give the awards for best heel or best face?

    ReplyDelete
  121. Ok,I'm all for people having an opinion and whatnot and I usually don't argue with them if they make sense but I have to speak on Chris Jericho winning wrestler of the year. That is the about the same as Dean Malenko getting #1 on the PWI 500 way back, its ridiculous. If you break it down,Chris Jericho didn't really have that great of year, not like he had last year.Yes,Chris Jericho held the tag team titles for about half the year but most of that was meaningless feuds, with a replacement partner and when they finally got the big feud,he got squashed. Then theres the IC title reign that he had for all of 3 weeks and while that Mysterio feud was really good and the Bash match was fantastic, its hardly enough to warrant him wrestler of the year status. As I mentioned before, you could make a case for Kurt Angle or AJ Styles or John Cena and a few Japan guys which is fine but to put Jericho over randy Orton is absurd.Randy Orton won the Royal Rumble match, won 2 WWE Championships, main evented more PPVs than Chris Jericho, had a pretty good feud with John Cena and a semi hot feud with Kofi Kingston, not to mention Randy Orton consistently portrays the most interesting and consistently spectacular character than anyone in wrestling, maybe this side of CM Punk. All that seems to be plenty of valid reasons to put Randy wrestler of the year.

Even C.M.Punk had a far superior year than Chris Jericho.Punk started the year off as IC Champion, won a second straight MITB,also won 2 world heavyweight championships, basically had the feud of the year with Jeff Hardy and displayed a character thats so compelling,so interesting and so spectacular that the WWE Universe never saw anything like him.I mean, have you seen his beard? Thats not just a beard, thats a carefully thought out demension to add to his heel character. The David Koresh heel persona CM Punk is currently demonstrating warrants him a spot over Jericho almost on its own merits. I mean,I know theres Japan and a few ROH guys who may have technically had better years than these two guys but they are having them on a much smaller scale. I think having the types of years Punk and Orton have had,one the biggest stage of them all in the wrestling buisness, should absolutely mean something.

    ReplyDelete
  122. Just to point out, the Jericho win wasn't even close (1,815 to 1,057 for Tanahashi) so I don't see it as being a really controversial win. Was he in my top three? Nope. But neither were Punk or Orton. Either he or Orton would have probably made my top five though.

The PWI 500 comparsion really doesn't work either because fans don't vote for that.

Jeff Hardy actually came extremely close to winning Most Charismatic (958 to 904).

    ReplyDelete
  123. The fact that Jericho won it in a landslide is kind of ridiculous.I'd just like to know what people were basing it on because obviously it wasn't on his success for the year.Maybe it was his name,I don't know but I've tried to come up with reasons as to why he would win and I just can't come up with any. Jeff hardy winning most charasmatic is kind of bothersome too since he's not overly charasmatic.Literally I can name 10 guys off the top of my head who have more charisma.Cena,Angle,Styles,Christian,Edge,Punk,The Pope,Triple H,Michaels,Nigel...yeah thats 10. I do think Jeff's minions find him charasmatic though, which is odd. CM Punk really should have won that award,to match his feud of the year win and he should have won most hated wrestler of the year too, although I'm not sure if the Observer has such a thing

    ReplyDelete
  124. After thinking about it, I think Jericho had a better year than Punk. Jericho got high-level exposure on all shows for half the year and elevated the tag titles higher than anyone in recent years (and the loss to DX doesn't apply as the voting period ended on 12/1). He got a decent level of mainstream attention during the Rourke angle in a year where no one else had anything similiar. And he had one of the best series of matches in the WWE all year with Mysterio.

Punk had meaningless feuds with Kane and Umaga, had a GREAT summer (easily the best season of any guy in any company), was treated like a red-headed stepchild in the feud with The Undetaker and did about a three week feud with Ron Killings. The current angle with him really didn't get rolling until after 12/1 so that really can't either. I think people really overrate his year because of the summer. Take that away and I don't even think he would have made the top ten.

    ReplyDelete
  125. i agree with will on what he said about punk

    ReplyDelete
  126. can anyone give the top 10 for every category of the awards

    ReplyDelete
  127. Well,I sorta understand the feeling on Punk that Will said but you just can't take away Punk's summer. If you took away Jericho's spring and all that mainstream attention, then how would his year have faired? And no matter what Chris Jericho does,he won't have the same kind of mainstream attention John Cena has and Cena doesn't really have that much but when compared to other wrestlers in the WWE,he smokes everyone,so I'm not sure how muchw eight that Jericho mainstream comment would hold but nevertheless, whether Jericho had a better year than Punk or not,its irrelevant because I don't think theres a case to be made for Jericho having a better year than Randy Orton but,its all good,I gave my opinion on the matter so congrats to Chris Jericho. I remember about 7 years ago people used to call Chris Jericho the best wrestler in America and I remember saying that if that was the case then wrestling in America is highly mediocre but,to Jericho's credit, for the last year and a half he's been deserving of such a title, even though I don't think he's the best wrestler in America,I think he's up there though. He's not better than Danielson or Nigel or Punk or Randy Orton though.

    ReplyDelete
  128. Well,I know this much,if Meltzer doesn't rate the Royal Rumble match over ****1/4 then I'd like to really see what his reasons would be to not rate it that high. I could make a case that it should be ranked ***** and honestly, thats what it should have been ranked. That match was flawless.

    ReplyDelete
  129. If you look at the history of the Wrestler of the Year awards, he has never given it to someone who didn't belong to a top 2 orginization within their country. It's a much bigger challenge in my opinion to carry a major company that has to please their main audience, casual viewers and the hardcore fans (WWE, TNA) rather than just cater to a certain niche demographic of the wrestling fans. (ROH, DGUSA, old ECW) I love the indy promotions just as much as the next hardcore fan, but I also do recognize it as a bigger challenge to carry a major company and the pressure that it puts on a wrestler.

Meltzer isn't looking at stats or World Title wins when it comes to Jericho. He is looking at the perspective of -- Who will make me watch this particular program/PPV for this company. Chris Jericho for the last two years, have been a channel changer for the WWE. For the stale program that they deliver night in and night out on any of their shows and PPV's, Jericho almost always has the most interesting segment, puts on a top tier match, and is unbelievably charasmatic. A big difference between guys like Danielson and Davey Richards and guys like Jericho is that Danielson and Davey wouldn't draw any attention in the WWE because frankly they're not all that charasmatic and wouldn't get a reaction the WWE "Universe". I know that it's mostly a kids audience but Jericho always garners a reaction whether it be good or bad every time he appears either from kids, teenagers or wrestling fans who have watching wrestling for over 20 years like myself. Same goes for Cena, except Cena isn't half the wrestler that Jericho is. (But Cena still garners a true fan reaction) I just don't think that Danielson will be booked right and utilized correctly because of his size and lack of natural charisma and mic skills. Same with Richards although I think they are the two best in ring workers today.

Jericho has the most interesting angles that made me turn the channel from Monday Night Football or whatever I was watching just to see him. Between the Michaels/wife angle, the Legend bashing, Rey's mask, and Jerishow, he was always the reason that I stopped to watch their programming. That's what Meltzer is basing his award on. Not titles or accolades.

I think Orton is a tremendous wrestler, but he doesen't garner a true reaction in my eyes with that company. He's sort of a heel, and sometimes a face depends on who he wrestles (Sheamus at the Rumble) and seems intent on being the same character night in and night out. HBK and HHH say what you will, people still cheer or boo them regularly on a consistent basis even though they've been the same character for the last decade.

This year there wasn't a domninant guy that carried a huge company. Orton, Tanahashi, and Angle came close but the orginizations carried themselves by their product. Cena carried the WWE in 07, and that's the closest we've come to a wrestler completely dominating their particular company. So when this happens where there isn't a clear cut favorite, he judged it with the notion of -- who is going to make me watch this program? And he's felt for the last two years that it was Jericho and I happen to agree. (Although Nigel could have won in 08, but as stated before he has never given WOTY to a wrestler from a smaller indy promotion)

Punk next year definitly should be in consideration. I love the cult like gimmick he has, and if he's a world champ for any amount of the year he could carry the company. His work at the Rumble was the best thing about the PPV.

    ReplyDelete
  130. The awards are voted on. They are not simply picked by Meltzer.

I'm not sure I understand the point you're making about Orton. What does "true reaction" really mean? When he gets face pops against certain babyfaces (and really he gets them to some degree against everyone), is that a sign of a problem of him lacking a "true reaction" or is the problem found with the babyface who doesn't get a "true reaction?" Are people cheering him because they like him in some situations or because they dislike the babyface at certain times?

  131. The rumble match being referred to as "flawless" is quite a stretch in my estimation.

There were a few spots that really annoyed me during this:

Cena used a spinning backdrop on Triple H, which saw Hunter's legs being swung around in order to kick HBK in the face, ultimately resulting in Hunter landing on top of Shawn's head. Cringe inducing.

Cena's "double five knuckle shuffle" on DX was thoroughly embarrassing.

Michaels attempting to skin the cat and Big Show having to stand there and wait patiently for HBK to use the ropes to pull himself up and over (when clearly, Show was in a good position to eliminate Shawn at that moment), followed by Show lumbering over toward HBK in order to do the headscissor spot just looked ridiculous. It was the kind of moment that takes me right out of a match.

As Rumble matches go, I thought it was underwhelming. Nowhere near the level of some others. 1992 Royal Rumble match didn't get 5 stars from Meltzer and that was about as good as a Rumble match is going to get, so I sincerely doubt that any ever will.

    ReplyDelete
  132. There was actually no rating given for the Rumble although that may have just been an oversight that will be corrected later in the week or next issue.

    Everything else:
    Christian/Jackson ***
    Miz/MVP **1/4
    Sheamus/Orton **
    James/McCool N/R
    Undertaker/Mysterio ***1/4

Every year some says its the worst ever it was good but theres always something to bitch about

    ReplyDelete
  136. Considering plenty of bad PPV matches are rated, it's pretty silly to say "It didn't get rated because it was so horrible!". It's more likely an oversight.

    ReplyDelete
  137. It seems he has cleared it up and gave it a ***1/2

    ReplyDelete
  138. Where was it mentioned? I haven't seen it in any of the updates. Unless it was mentioned in one of the radio shows.

    ReplyDelete
  139. I sent an email to dave@wrestlingobserver.com, asking about the Royal Rumble match rating. I didn't expect a reply but I did get one from hsmeltzer@juno.com, who said "It was ***1/2" I presume this is the person who answers and queries etc.

    ReplyDelete
  140. ***1/2 is low,to me,for that Rumble. It wasn't better than 92 but it was absolutely second to that one. I really don't see where the complaints for this rumble match are.The pacing was tremendous. There was no dull periods. Guys weren't lingering around when they shouldn't have been. There wasn't 50 million skin the cats like last years. There were memorable moments like CM Punk's entire segment which may have been the best solo Rumble performance I have ever seen or Edge's return, even R-Truth eliminating Big Show and Mark Henry, which was a complete shock. Even the one comedy spot was really good between Khali and Beth Phoenix.I know people will complain about the quickness some guys were eliminated in but having Matt hardy or Shelton benjamin get eliminated in 75 seconds is alot better than having them stick around for 25 minutes doing nothing. Its an easy ****3/4 to me.

    ReplyDelete
  141. While I haven't seen this Rumble, I have trouble ever going more than four stars on any Rumble simply because they fail so obviously at telling time. If we deduct for botches we should be doing the same for botching stopwatches.

Joe, that's definitely the email. I checked the Observer issue today and it had been updated with the ***1/2 rating as well.

    ReplyDelete
  142. Well,I disagree with that Will. The botched time intervals aren't the wrestlers fault. The wrestlers themselves aren't messing anything up,which makes it alot different than botched moves, which hurt matches. Irregular intervals shouldn't have any barring of whats going on in the ring,I don't think.

    ReplyDelete
  143. Just a difference of opinion then. Personally I judge based on the logic of a match as a whole and not simply based on the "in-ring". There's plenty of things that hurt matches which aren't the wrestlers ideas or things that are out of their control, but regardless negatively influence my opinion of the match.

    ReplyDelete
  144. What were the top 5 matches and the top 5 shows that Dave chose?

  145. Does anyone know the rating for Foley/Edge/Lita v Dreamer/Funk/Beulah at One Night Stand 06?

    ReplyDelete
  146. That's a great question concerning the six-person match at ONS '06. That match would definitely be ***+ stars for me and it's curious that it's not on here. If anyone knows, please post it.

Dave didn't report what he voted for (or if he did) but here are the results:

Match of the Year Top Five:
    1. Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels 4/5 Houston
    2. Davey Richards vs. Shingo Takagi 9/6 Chicago
    3. KENTA vs. Katsuhiko Nakajima 3/1 Tokyo
    4. Bryan Danielson vs. Naruki Doi 9/6 Chicago
    5. KENTA & Go Shiozaki vs. Kensuke Sasaki & Katsuhiko Nakajima 6/22 Tokyo

    Best Show Top Five:
    1. Dragon Gate USA Open the Historical Gate 7/25 Philadelphia
    2. UFC 100 7/11 Las Vegas
    3. Dragon Gate USA Open the Untouchable Gate 9/6 Chicago
    4. WWE Wrestlemania 25 4/5 Houston

  150. RAW Elimination Chamber ***1/2
    Drew McIntyre vs. Kane *1/4
Michelle McCool & Layla vs. Gail Kim & Maryse 1/2*
    The Miz vs. MVP **3/4
    Smackdown Elimination Chamber ***1/2

    ReplyDelete
  151. Wow really, he gave SD ****1/4 last year but only gave SD's *** 1/2 this year? This year's SD blew last years out of the water.

    ReplyDelete
  152. See,Meltzer is so fickle. What is he watching when he rates these matches, honestly? This SD Chamber match from this year was alot better than ***1/2.The Raw Chamber was an easy ****.I think meltzer rates certain matches higher than others because of the people involved in the matches. If Shawn Michaels was in the Raw match,he'd given it ****1/2 because he's known for having a Shawn Michaels bias.I honestly don't know how you could qualify the SD Chamber match being only ***1/2.I just don't.

    ReplyDelete
  153. TOO DAMN SERIOUS. It's just fun snowflakes.

That said, it's hard to take criticism of him all that serious when all you're going by is the individual ratings and not reading the reviews themselves. That's opening the paper, looking at the rating of the movie review and criticizing it without even reading the review. If you're going to take it serious enough to say "WELL HE RATED MATCH X THIS", it's time to just buy a subscription. And then you can read the Jack Brisco bio from two weeks and realize that pro wrestling is so much more than star ratings.

For what it's worth, F4W came out earlier and Bryan rated the Chambers at ***1/2 and ***3/4. So it's not just wacky Meltzer. It's the wacky website as a whole at best.

    ReplyDelete
  154. The ratings are subjective, there are no correct ratings. I'm glad that you enjoyed the matches JJ. I actually thought the Raw chamber match was quite dull, especially the period when Orton and DiBiase had everyone laid out, I thought the Smackdown chamber match was better, but only really picked up towards the end.

    ReplyDelete
  155. He didn't underrate the matches at all those ratings were dead on.....sorry but last years Chambers were WAY WAY better. And to the person who said if HBK was in the Chamber he would have ranked it higher.....yah your correct cause it would HAVE BEEN BETTER. Chamber was an average PPV and the Chamber matches were not that great

    ReplyDelete
  156. RAW Elimination Chamber was crap. **3/4

    Smackdown was about ****.

I think Meltzer just goes wacky with gimmick matches.

    ReplyDelete
  157. The Raw Chamber was really good because of the stories being told in the match. Whether the part where Orton and Ted laid everyone out was dull wasn't the point of that situation. It was to tell a story that ted and Orton were on the same page, which made what ted did to him that more devious,so I tolerated it. Nobody was buried in the match. They actually treated Kofi Kingston like an equal to Cena and HHH during parts of the match,so that was nice.It further makes me believe that he can hold his own in that spot. The ending sequence with HHH and Cena was also good, all the way to how Triple H tapped out.Its the little things like that that make a match for me.I'd rather have those things then things like people jumping off a pod door or Morrison trying to do something crazy to get himself over.

    ReplyDelete
  158. Did he rated Bryan vs Jericho from NXT last week?

    ReplyDelete
  159. The RAW match was horrible. The Orton/Ted story was only 1 part of the match, and it wasn't all that amazing. It showed that they worked together well, and Ted eventually betrayed Orton. That was alright. The rest of the time everyone was lying around doing nothing. Same with the ending, Tripps pedigrees Sheamus, lies around for about 20 seconds, Cena simply applies the STF.

I'm not a fan of spot fests either, but when no one is doing annything, it can get quite boring.

    ReplyDelete
  160. Triple H was in the ring,at the time he delivered the Pedigree to Sheamus, for nearly 20 minutes and was DDT'd on a steel ramp. Delivering the Pedigree and then just popping up for the cover like you've been in the ring for 45 seconds is ridiculous. Selling is usually a good thing. Kofi was lying on the ground for ten minutes because Ted DiBiase literally tried to kill him by sticking his head through the hole in the chamber to choke him. You just don't get up 5 minutes later from something like that.

    ReplyDelete
  161. Are those times for real? Twenty minutes to sell anything short of a gunshot is so stupid. I know that logically you need to sell so it looks believable but the problem is that TWENTY MINUTES TO SELL A DDT ON A STEEL RAMP is not believable.

    ReplyDelete
  162. Does anybody know what is the rating for Mystero vs Punk match from 12/02/2010 SmackDown? It was a great TV match, I would rate it ***1/2.

    ReplyDelete
  163. Mysterio/Punk wasn't rated.

Generally if a TV match is rated, it'll be over *** and be listed here.

    ReplyDelete
  164. Meltzer generally doesnt rate TV matches now-a-days, but Bryan Alvarez (the other host of the Observer) gave Mysterio/Punk ***1/2 i believe

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  166. Well, here is how I think Wrestlemania will pan out from a strict star rating perspective and lets see how right I might be in comparison to what meltzer will have.

C.M. Punk Vs Rey Mysterio ***3/4
Money In The Bank Ladder Match ***1/4
Randy Orton Vs Cody Rhodes Vs Ted DiBiase **3/4
The Miz & Big Show Vs John Morrison & R-Truth **1/2
    Triple H Vs Sheamus **3/4
Bret Hart Vs Vince McMahon **
    Chris Jericho Vs Edge ****
    Batista Vs John Cena ***3/4

  171. I'm very interested in the rating Meltzer will give to the Taker vs HBK of last sunday, another no less than ****1/2 rating, since Meltzer said in his coverage of WM 'this two are going to win Match of the Year for two straight years'.

    ReplyDelete
  172. I think it will be ****1/2 stars. Not as good as last year, but I don't think anyone expected it to top the previous years match. Everything else on the card, just lacked effort to me. Edge couldn't help it cause he's obviously rusty and somewhat hurt still. I don't know. It just seemed super flat this year.

  173. Bret Hart vs 1-2-3 Kid was rated 4 1/2 stars from July 94. This match isn't listed on the site but should be. The rating was listed in the results section of the newsletter. Also, Bret vs Bulldog from Dec 95 was actually rated 4 1/2 stars (not 4 3/4).

  174. There's TONS of ratings (like at least 4-5 shows each issue) in the results sections of the back issues available on the site. But those are reader-rated, not rated by Meltzer. Therefore, they aren't on here.

I don't know if that's why you mean by "results section" but, if so, it may not be by Meltzer.

Bryan gave Taker/Michaels ****3/4 and he was at the show. So it'll definitely get ****1/2 at the very least.

  175. ****3/4 is too high honestly because it wasn't as good as last years and that match was rated ****3/4 by meltzer even though,in all honesty,it was a *****

    ReplyDelete
  176. Well, it's hard to compare both matches in my opinion, but if Meltzer rates this match ****3/4 or even ***** i won't complain. Also Meltzer said in his review of the event 'this match was as good as their match of last year', also Meltzer has an history of overrating second matches (Hart vs Hart cage match for example) so, I know that rating matches is just to subjective, so i won't be surprised if he rates this match ****3/4.

  177. Ratings are in.

    Miz/Show vs. Morrison/Truth 1/2*
Orton vs. Rhodes vs. Dibiase **3/4
    Money in the Bank ***3/4
    HHH vs. Sheamus ***1/4
    Mysterio vs. Punk ***
Hart vs. McMahon "I wouldn’t even try to rate this because the whole thing went over my head, and everyone else’s." (Bryan went into negative *** territory for this which I fully back.)
    Jericho vs. Edge ****
    Ten-Woman Tag DUD
    Batista vs. Cena ***1/2
    Taker vs. Michaels ****3/4

    ReplyDelete
  178. Lol it appears Meltzer and I gave the show pretty much identical marks. Good to know.

  179. Batista/Cena is underrated to me. It was a better match than Jericho/Edge and was better than Batista/Taker from 23.Easily Cena's best Wrestlemania match. Michaels/Taker is just overrated. It wasn't as good as last years from a quality standpoint. People get caught up in the emotion from the match, like with Flair/Michaels and it makes people think the match is better than it actually was. It was a fabulous match for sure, easy ****1/2 but ****3/4 is just too much.I think anyways. Giving Hart/Vince -*** isn't fair to them because it wasn't a match, they weren't trying to have a match,so rating it as a match is completely wrong. Its like when people tried to say Mayweather/Show was some **** epic. It wasn't a match so you can't rate it,good or bad. If people wanted Bret to kick Vince's ass for 10 minutes then put the Sharpshooter on,thats what they got. Its the difference between this match and the Michaels/Vince match where those two actually tried to put together some resemblence of a match and Michaels put together probably the greatest carry job in wrestling history.

  180. jericho vs edge match did feel like a **** match maybe it was because of the dead crowd but it just didnt feel like a big time match like it was with batista vs cena to thats the main difference between the matchs and why i think he underrated the cena vs batista match and overrated the jericho vs edge match

    ReplyDelete
  181. Hey Will, any idea what Bryan's (Alvarez) ratings were for Cena vs. Batista and Jericho vs. Edge were? I have felt that Bryan's reviews and ratings in the last couple of years have been more consistent than Dave's (But then again it is personal opinion!)

    ReplyDelete
  182. JasonJericho:
I think you can rate Michaels/Taker ****3/4 without being caught up in the "emotion". Meltzer has given various indy matches ****+ and if "emotion" was a criteria for him, they wouldn't have hit that level at all.

    Sam Roy:
I'll just post all of Bryan's WM ratings in case anyone else is interested:

    Miz/Show vs. Morrison/Truth *3/4
Orton vs. Rhodes vs. Dibiase ***
    Money in the Bank ***1/2
    HHH vs. Sheamus **1/4
    Mysterio vs. Punk ***1/4
    Hart vs. McMahon NEGATIVE ***
    Jericho vs. Edge ***1/4
    Ten-Woman Tag *
    Batista vs. Cena ****
    Taker vs. Michaels ****3/4

It should be noted that all his ratings come from being at the show live as opposed to watching on TV.

    ReplyDelete
  183. Well I think that Bryan overrated the opener, Jericho vs Edge and HHH vs Sheamus, and Meltzer underrated Cena vs Batista, not to mention both overrated the divas match (I think it was worth negative rating). And I have to agree with Will, the Taker vs HBK could be rated ****3/4 easily.

    ReplyDelete
  184. I do belive this year's HBK-Taker match was BETTER because of the psychology of HBK working on Taker's leg i.e. Moonsasult through the table that hits only his legs. I ABSOLUTELY LOVED the FINISH. I would like to know why Y2J-Edge got 4 stars. I'm going to watch it again later but I was suprised when i saw that beacuse I believed Cena-Batista II was the better of the 2 World Title matches

    ReplyDelete
  185. I still dont' get why some people rate the money in the bank matches so high. I've seen so many ***1/4 and ***1/2 matches that are MUCH better.

This years match was alright, about ***, but WM 23, 24 and 25 were under the *** mark. The first ever from 21 was really good though.

Anywho, Taker/Michaels was epic. They messed up less than they did last year, they paid homage to their previous encounter, and the ending was very fitting. Taker telling Michaels to just stay down with Michaels telling him to finish him off, slapping him, and receiving one of the best looking tombstones was great.

    ****3/4 easy.

    ReplyDelete
  186. Then again I should note that I rated both HBK-Taker matches ****3/4. I just thought the STORY and the Psychology in this years match was BETTER

    ReplyDelete
  187. The post above my two posts about Shawn-Taker is right on the money. I disagree on MITB. I enjoyed the first one, this years and the one from 23

    ReplyDelete
  188. Who's Bryan Alvarez and does he even have a website?

    ReplyDelete
  189. MY Ratings:
    Unified Tag **
    Triple Threat **3/4
    MITB ***1/2
    HHH-Sheamus ***
    Bret-Vince NR (I don't rate one-sided matches)
    Rey-Punk ***
    Y2J-Edge ***1/2
    Cena-Batista II ***3/4
    HBK-TAKER ****3/4

  190. That moonsault wasn't designed to hit Taker on his ankle. He was suppose to hit Taker flush on the chest. It was a good mistake but Shawn was clearly upset that he missed which is why he got up so fast to throw a tantrum then fell back down. Clearly I'm in the minority on Shawn/Taker not being ****3/4 which is fine,I just don't think it was all time top 50 classic, which is what a ****3/4 match is. For instance,it wasn't better than Shawn/Angle,which basically had the same psychology, the same level of crowd heat,it just lacked the emotion of Shawn/Taker,although the Angle match did have emotion, just a different kind.

    ReplyDelete
  191. I also disagree with the person that said Wrestlemania 23's MITB match was under ***. That match was an easy **** match,I could so far as saying ****1/4. It was the longest MITB match and had nearly the same level of work the first MITB did,it just lacked a Chris benoit type wrestler telling a story. For me,the only MITB match that was under *** was the second one.

    ReplyDelete
  192. Heres the thing,if people who rated the first match ****3/4 say this years was better, then shouldn't it be *****? I mean, are people sorta afraid to dish out a WWE match ***** nowadays? I mean,I'm not.I thought last years Taker/Michaels match was ***** and I absolutely thought Angle/Michaels was *****.It seems like theres a bit of bias against the WWE to rate one of their matches *****. Are people really convinced that there hasn't been a ***** match in the WWE since Shawn and Takers HIAC in 97? What about Rock/Austin II? Jericho & Benoit Vs Austin & HHH? Austin Vs HHH? Edge Vs Eddie's No DQ match? TLC 1? Benoit Vs Triple H vs Michaels I? The 04 and the 2010 Royal Rumble? These matches were ***** to me.

    ReplyDelete
  193. Was MITB 23 the one that Kennedy won? If so, there's no way that's under ***.

"Who's Bryan Alvarez and does he even have a website?

Bryan Alvarez is what Dave Meltzer would be like if he was the funniest man on Earth (outside of Kevin Nash).

He done the Figure Four Weekly newsletter for a long time (easily ten years+) which merged with the Observer into the same site a couple of years back (www.f4wonline.com).

He also co-wrote The Death of WCW which everyone should read. He jokes far too often about doing The Death of TNA for it not be at least an contemplated idea.
